Wine Chillers And Coolers
Posted on If you enjoy drinking wine and have a good selection of different ones, then you will need somewhere to store them. You may want to consider buying wine chillers and coolers to keep the wine at the perfect temperature for drinking. There are many different types of chillers to choose from and you may find the whole buying process daunting. You will need to understand the different wine temperatures and how they should be stored. You also have to think about the size of the chiller that you will need and your budget.
The first thing that you will need to think about is the size of the wine chillers and coolers so you will need to consider how much wine you will need to store. Having a chiller that is too large will be a waste of money and not keep the wine temperatures perfect. You also have to consider where you are aiming to place the chiller and the space that you have available for it. They can be quite large and you do not want it dominating the area. If you are unsure of the style of chiller that you need you should research well.
If you are new to keeping wine then you should look at wine coolers and chillers that have pre set temperatures so that you get the perfect wine temperatures every time. As you become more experienced then you can change the design of the chiller to have two separate sections for different wines. You also need to look at the different features on the chiller and ensure that it is not too complicated to use. Although it should be good, if it is too difficult then you may find that your wine comes out with frost on it rather than chilled.
You should also look at the different makes and models of the wine chillers and coolers and decide which ones will fit in with your budget. Some of the top brands are very expensive and although their reputation is excellent you may find that an unknown brand is just as good. The more expensive brands will give you more features and some of these are fantastic. You can get chillers with bottle openers and super chill facilities.
They enable the wine to be chilled in a very short space of time which is great for un-expected visitors. You will also want the chiller to be as quiet as possible when on as they can be quite noisy to run. Whatever wine coolers and chillers you decide on you will need to think about where to have it placed. If you drink a bottle of wine a day then having it in the kitchen is a good place and you can get smaller chillers that will hold 6 bottles of wine. These different wine chillers can help you to entertain your guests with perfect wine temperatures and delicious wine. You can have a perfect dinner party with some of your friends and family and show off your wine collection.
How do Wine Aerators Work?
Posted onA wine aerator is a device that sits above a decanter or glass, allowing the maximum amount of air to flow through the liquid as it’s poured. In the past five years, many models of aerator have been introduced to the market, giving wine lovers a number of options for enjoying their younger wines by the glass, or by the bottle, hours earlier than they could with decanting alone.
Why aerate wine?
Most full-bodied reds require time to “breathe” in order for the flavors to mellow and blend for an ideal drinkable state. In fact, most wines under 15 years will benefit from aeration – this is why we often think the last glass out of a bottle tastes better than the first. Simply uncorking a bottle and allowing it to stand will not sufficiently aerate the wine – it needs more of the surface area of the wine exposed to get enough contact with air.
Do all wines need aeration?
Not all. The oldest and palest vintages should be enjoyed after only minutes out of the bottle – as they’ve reached their peak flavor in storage.
But, as most of us are not storing our wine bottles for years, or buying vintage cases at auction, our preferred brands will likely benefit from the use of an aerator or 30-90 minutes in a wide bottom decanter.
What kind of wine aerator should you buy?
That depends. Many models are for reds or whites only. Others have single uses, either by the glass or bottle. An ideal choice for wine lovers new to aeration is a multi-function aerator that can switch from bottle to glass.
Glass or Polycarbonate?
Several popular glass models are available on the market, but the lesser-known polycarbonate options are more practical in terms of longevity and functionality. The Wine Weaver is a fun, polycarbonate choice – it comes in a number of jewel tones and is engineered to allow maximum airflow by releasing the wine in small streams along the sides of the glass or decanter.
Prolong the Life of your Bottle
A word of caution: too much air can be a bad thing for your wine. Pair your wine aerator with a vacuum pump if you like enjoy the same bottle over several days. There’s nothing worse than having to throw out a half bottle of great wine that has been spoiled by resealing too much air in the bottle.
A great gift
Wine aerators are high on the must-have gift list for wine lovers for this Christmas. Give them as hostess gifts and you’ll be a big hit at this season’s holiday parties, where more than one great bottle of wine is sure to be served.

A Wine Consumer Powder Keg
Posted onLast year I ran across a website that stirred my interest in wine consumer issues and I wrote an article about it (see my article at: http://winecoolerblog.com/category/wine-issues). The website (freethegrapes.com) presented specific information with regards to shipping wine between the various states. I found out that several states actually made it a criminal offense to do this type of shipping of wine. Believe it or not, some states even classified this crime as a felony. Because it has been some time since I came across this issue, I decided to reacquaint myself with it in order to share the facts with you.
What I found is the issue has progressed to a critical situation called the Comprehensive Alcohol Regulatory Effectiveness Act of 2010 (commonly called House Bill #5034). Hearings on this bill were recently held in late September of this year. This bill amends the Webb-Kenyon Act by emphasizing Congressional Policy that each state or territory shall continue to have the primary authority to regulate alcoholic beverages and decreasing the ability for legal actions challenging the authority of states to regulate alcoholic beverages. This amendment negates the Federal authority to regulate interstate commerce in this particular case.
House Bill #5034 further amends the Wilson Act to eliminate the state requirement to regulate the importation of all alcohol based liquors or liquids to the same extent and in the same manner as such alcohol based products produced in such state or territory. In my words, this means that each state can and probably will discriminate against these products that are produced outside that respective state. Once again, I believe the Federal government’s role in interstate commerce is being set aside by H.R. 5034.
Why do you suppose, with all the critical legislation that congress should be working on, that they are undertaking an issue like this? The answer is lobbyists for the Beverage Distribution and Wholesale Industry are putting pressure on them to do so. The traditional American business model starts with a producer that leads to a wholesaler that leads to the consumer. The wholesalers in this equation are naturally fighting your ability to purchase and ship directly from the wine producer of your choice, strictly a matter of money. Wholesalers do not want anyone messing with their “money tree” that has been in place so long.
During my review of this issue, I did find information from Congressman Mike Thompson (California), a person who testified against this discriminatory House Bill (review his testimony at: http://mikethompson.house.gov/News/DocumentSingle.aspx?DocumentID=209346. His remarks will make you think about the evolution of regulation of alcoholic beverages since the era of Prohibition in the United States. Beer lovers if you think this is only a wine issue then you had better think again. If you have a favorite brewery outside of your resident state, you may not be able to get that favorite shipped to your home.
The Commerce Act was established by Congress and litigated many times since Prohibition. All of this Post-Prohibition activity led to our current regulations that have proven to be some of the best in the World. It is time for consumers of alcoholic beverages to get involved. Visit the freethegrapes.org website. They have made getting a response to your Congressperson simple with an easy to fill our form letter that can be easily e-mailed to the right people. In my opinion, if we don’t rally around getting House Bill 5034 thrown out, we will be stepping back in time with regard to your consumer and constitutional rights.
